It all began in the first Ben & Jerry’s Scoop Shop ever… a dilapidated, out of the way, one-time gas station in Burlington, VT. Ben and Jerry had barely made it through their first year. The “B” word (Business) was a term they preferred to avoid, and their newfound ice cream avocation amounted to little more than a day-to-day struggle.
On the other hand, they had made it! For the boys, the success of their hard work, great ice cream and returning customers unquestionably called for a good-time gala event, just out of the blue…and definitely out of gratitude.
Charity Cone Day was launched as much to thank their community as to congratulate their staff, and, it goes without saying — to have an outrageously good time. Charity Cone Day was an instant success then, and it’s an even greater Ben & Jerry’s tradition now.
More than 30 years on, Ben & Jerry’s celebrates Charity Cone Day across the globe from Hong Kong to Helsinki, Mexico to Malta — serving up well over a million scoops of peace, love & ice cream each year.
