- Reduce emissions and conserve energy. Reduce your need for fossil fuel. Drive fuel efficient, less-polluting cars and use them wisely – or better yet, use only public transport. Replace old, worn out appliances with more efficient new ones; use energy efficient light bulbs. Insulate homes and turn down air conditioning just a few degrees. By using less electricity you will save money and reduce emissions from our power plants.

That’s what Ben & Jerry’s believes and that’s why we’ve
teamed up with Hong Kong’s Clean Air Foundation. Ben & Jerry’s has a long and proud history of partnering with
local organizations to make positive social, environmental
and economic changes in the places where we do business.
And, here in Hong Kong, nothing is more important than
improving the quality of the air that we breathe.

We all know that we have a serious problem — Hong Kong’s
air quality is dangerous. On bad days, our air contains
more than a billion suspended particles in one breath,
and that’s equivalent to smoking eight cigarettes each day.
Hong Kong University tells us that we have almost three
times more soot and pollutants in our air than New York
or Paris, and estimates that approximately 2,000 people
die each year from air pollution related illnesses.

The Clean Air Foundation is a newly created organization
whose members are dedicated to using the legal process
to educate, inform and change government policy and
regulations regarding air pollution. Together, we know that
citizens can make positive change when called to action.

The Clean Air Foundation and Ben & Jerry’s believe that
the citizens of Hong Kong can make a difference. It’s a
common perception that our pollution problems come from
across our borders. But according to the Civic Exchange
and Hong Kong University of Science and Technology
studies, the reality is that more than 50% of the time, our
pollution comes from vehicles on our roads, ships in our
harbours and from our local power plants. Outdated air
quality objectives set by the government provide us with
no protection from the hazards of air pollution, and the
dangerous pollution levels are damaging our health. The
government could do more in fulfilling Hong Kong Basic
Law to protect the life & health of citizens.

Together we can tell the Government to recognize and
respect our right to good health under the Bill of Rights
Ordinance. The Clean Air Foundation is fighting a legal
battle on behalf of every Hong Kong citizen to address the
inadequate and outdated Air Pollution Control Ordinance.
The Hong Kong Air Quality Objectives (AQOs) are based
on antiquated 1987 WHO Air Quality Guidelines for Europe.
Other developed countries have progressively tightened
their air quality standards with the implementation of
newer air quality guidelines. We strongly encourage our
government to improve the Hong Kong Standards to better
protect our health.
